Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Museum Security Officer position. The Museum Security Officer is a part-time, 24 hour per week, year-round position, starting at $19.35 - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Ensures a safe and secure environment at the Amherst College Museums (Beneski Museum of Natural History, Mead Art Museum & Russian Cultural Center). Provides exemplary customer service representing the museums and the college. Conducts regular patrols of public areas, staff areas, collections storage, and mechanical spaces, as well as museum exteriors. Ensures the policies, procedures, and mission of the department are adhered to and upheld at all times.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Gallery Patrols
  • Assists with ensuring the policies, procedures, and fundamentals of the Museum Security Department are upheld.
  • Refers questions to the Director of Museum Security as needed.


Facility Patrols

  • Staffs regular patrol shifts as a Museum Security Officer.


Special Event Supervision and Setup

  • Assists the museums with special event management and monitoring.
  • Ensures occupancy limitations are not exceeded, and ensures all aspects of the event are adhered to (proximity to art work, no food areas, etc.)
  • Assists with setup and breakdown of special event items (clearing gallery furniture out of program spaces and moving in special event tables, chairs, and other items as needed).


Administrative

  • Completes activity logs, documents incidents through detailed reports, and conducts email correspondence as needed.
  • Documents items through photography.
  • Conducts all duties for the Lobby Attendant position as needed (primarily during non-academic periods)

Qualifications

Required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to lift, pull, push and carry up to 35 lbs. (setting up and breaking down special events including
    food, furniture, electronics, etc.).
  • Moderate repetitive hand motions (keyboard and mouse).
  • Frequent walking and standing.
  • Ability to work in a high stress position involving rule enforcement
  • Ability to work in a high risk position for workplace violence as identified by OSHA (Working with the
    public, protecting valuable property, and at night)
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift check
  • Successful completion of all required reference and background checks

Preferred:
  • Associate's Degree (Criminal Justice, Administration, and/ or Emergency Management)
    and/or an accredited Law Enforcement or Professional Security Officer Certification, additional
    certifications (CIPS, CPR & First Aid)
  • 6 Months-1year of experience in private security and/or law enforcement or a similar field.
