Department Summary:

Bridgewater State Universitys Library Services is located in the Clement C. Maxwell Library and is open an average of 94 hours each week during the academic year. It is a busy, dynamic place with classrooms, academic and administrative offices throughout the building. The library serves all BSU students, faculty, staff, and researchers from across the country and world.

Library Services is dedicated to meeting the needs of its communities, to updating its service models as pedagogies and librarianship evolve, to renewing the knowledge and skills of librarians and staff as practices change, to deploying new technologies to improve interactions with library users and user experiences. Essential Duties:

The Maxwell Library at Bridgewater State University seeks an innovative, service-oriented Systems Librarian to develop, manage, document, and troubleshoot the librarys web site and core library systems. In close collaboration with the e-Resources Librarian, Collection Development & Metadata Librarian, and the Head of Archives & Special Collections, the incumbent will maintain library systems and applications using a broad range of technologies. The Systems Librarian will also collaborate with other librarians and partners from across BSU to research and implement practical, usable technology solutions to support the work of the students, faculty, librarians, staff and the broader BSU community.

The Systems Librarian will be primarily responsible for management of Koha (Integrated Library System), the Maxwell Library website (which is set for a complete Drupal based redesign in the upcoming months), Springshares LibApps suite of software, and the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan system, as well as any new applications the library may adopt or develop. The incumbent will also collaborate as required to maintain systems and applications that the e-Resources Librarian, Collection Development & Metadata Librarian, and the Head of Archives & Special Collections employ. The salary range is $60,000 to $70,000, dependent upon experience and education.

The Systems Librarian reports directly to the Dean of the Library. The incumbent will serve as a library liaison in selected disciplines. Participation in professional organizations, service in library and university governance, and appropriate professional development activities are expected and required for tenure. In addition, the Systems Librarian may supervise Library Assistants, Graduate Assistants, and student workers.

The Systems Librarian will:

  • Administer and maintain the librarys core systems, including Koha ILS, the library website, Springshare LibApps, and ILLiad interlibrary loan application. Ensure that systems remain available and interoperable.


  • Collaborate with librarians and staff as necessary to support and troubleshoot other library applications, including Virtual Commons (BEPress Institutional Repository), EZProxy, Omeka, ArchiveSpace, Archive-It, Ebsco Discovery Service, and related systems.


  • Work closely with the Library staff and vendors on a full redesign of the Maxwell Librarys website and related technologies.


  • Provide technical expertise, day-to-day administration, and broad support for traditional and emerging library hardware and software solutions and standards. Research and recommend technologies to support evolving library reference, instruction, and access services models.


  • Provide library systems support to library colleagues. Understand and respond to library systems-related needs across library units.


  • Collaborate closely with the BSU IT Department as necessary, to implement and support authentication and security services.


  • Serve as a point of contact for library systems and emerging technology vendors.


  • Provide written reports, assessments, analyses, and documentation as needed and upon request.


  • Advise, train, and teach staff, faculty, and students in new library technologies.


  • Engage in professional activities, continuing scholarship, and University-wide committees, to satisfy promotion and tenure requirements of the Massachusetts State College Association (MSCA) contract.


  • Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments.


  • Find, evaluate, and recommend new technologies and design implementation processes.


Academic rank at hire will be determined by the candidates qualifications and MSCA contract specifications.





Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Relevant experience in an academic, large public, or special library.
  • Familiarity with library operations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience using a wide variety of library system platforms and applications, and current library-related hardware and software.
  • Understanding of library security and authentication systems and practices.
  • Programming language experience such as HTML, XML, CSS, Javascript, Python, Drupal, and/or other scripting languages and CMS based web development tools.
  • Familiarity with database reporting standards.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a team setting.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing EZProxy or another access authentication software.
  • Experience with the Koha ILS and Springshares LibApps.
  • Second masters degree in a related discipline (second masters degree required for promotion beyond Associate Librarian rank).
  • Two years experience in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to support an inclusive educational and work environment, working effectively with a diverse faculty and student population.
  • Understanding of networking, including cloud-based server technology.
  • Experience with website design and various hosting platforms such as WordPress or Drupal.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
