Job summary
The senior environmental engineer is an integral member of the environmental team and works to optimize environmental performance to support Platte River’s vision, mission, and values.
Key areas of focus include environmental project and program management. This role must keep up with the latest environmental regulations and oversee work performed by consultants and contractors. We are looking for someone with strong people skills, who is also detail-oriented and can work independently with minimal supervision.

Schedule and environment
This position works onsite at Platte River's Rawhide Energy Station in an industrial power plant environment. The work week is typically Monday through Thursday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm. After-hours or overtime work is required from time to time to respond to urgent matters.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Provides specialized environmental and engineering support aligned with the organization’s vision, mission, and values.
- Develops and manages programs to comply with environmental requirements for water quality, spill prevention, control and countermeasure, industrial waste management, contaminated soil remediation, and other areas as assigned.
- Manages complex projects across teams, handling multiple tasks like budgeting, contract development, and document management.
- Professionally interacts with regulators, including during agency inspections.
- Responds to emergencies as needed for environmental incidents, coordinating onsite efforts, implementing best management practices and follow-up actions, including reporting and communications.
- Prepares or oversees technical reports and plans required by regulatory agencies.
- Conducts routine internal audits and provides recommendations for improvements as needed.
- Monitors, informs, and recommends appropriate responses to changes in environmental regulations on the federal, state, and local levels.
- Represents the organization in agency stakeholder processes for new environmental rules.
- Implements training programs on environmental compliance and awareness.
Other functions
- Provides mentorship to employees to further technical knowledge and career development.
- Supports colleagues within the department.
- Participates in industry trade organizations and training to keep current on best practices.
- May be subject to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Must be familiar with federal environmental statutes and their implementation.
- Self-motivated, organized, flexible, and able to independently manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to support cross-functional teams with internal and external customers.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet inflexible regulatory deadlines, and occasionally work with difficult individuals while maintaining composure.
- Demonstrated project planning and project management skills.
- Ability to work effectively from flexible office locations.
- Ability to occasionally work outside of normal work hours to respond to accidents and emergencies and other urgent matters.
How to qualify
Required criteria
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related technical field.
- One of the following: Professional Engineer license, Project Management Professional certification, a master’s degree, or a combination of equivalent experience and formal education (as determined by Platte River).
- Ability to remain insurable under the vehicle liability policy and subject to random drug screening under Colorado Department of Transportation requirements as a commercial motor vehicle driver.
- Eight years of progressive experience related to environmental compliance.
Preferred criteria
- Experience working in the electric utility industry.
- Experience working in and around industrial facilities.
- Experience and thorough understanding of specific regulatory programs:
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency coal combustion residuals rule.
- Stormwater discharge permitting, industrial and construction.
- Spill prevention, control and countermeasure plan development and compliance.
Pay
This is a salaried exempt role that is paid bi-weekly. Factors that may be used to determine actual pay include specific skills, years of experience, education, and certifications.
- Hiring range: $115,360 to $141,316 if annualized.
- Full range for position: $115,360 to $167,272 if annualized.
