What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Library Professional 1/Library Professional 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The National Security Research Center (NSRC) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks a full-time, onsite Research Librarian to support the Research Librarian Team. We are searching for a Research Librarian (Library Professional 1/2) experienced in and excited about conducting research in physical archives and digital environments, and supporting the findability and discoverability of digital information.
The NSRC, LANL's classified library, preserves and provides access to classified research and development materials related to the design, testing, and production of nuclear weapons. The NSRC's collections contain technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security.
Library Professional 1 $64,700 - $101,400 Core responsibilities include:
- Conduct research with and on behalf of customers, both internal and external, including tracking down difficult-to-find references within physical archives and digital repositories.
- Track ongoing customer requests using a ticketing system to ensure all requests are successfully completed.
- Support the NSRC's digital repositories and search engines, which may include training customers (individual and group), providing feedback for user experience improvements to developers, and cataloging documents.
- Assist in the creation of controlled vocabularies and evaluation of metadata standards
- Promote findability and discoverability of digital documents and data.
- Maintain familiarity with professional best practices through professional development
Library Professional 2 ($78,700 - $125,100) In addition to the core responsibilities outlined at the lower level, a candidate at level 2 may independently take charge of larger projects such as, but not limited to, customer research projects, authorship of papers with reference support, development of classified vocabularies and ontologies, and evaluation of AI/ML accuracy.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: - Experience conducting research/reference work with and on behalf of customers

- Familiarity with metadata standards
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in team and solo project environments while fostering a respectful, inclusive space
- Ability to juggle and track multiple projects and customer requests simultaneously
- Capable of giving presentations to small and large audiences, both in-person and online
- Adaptability to an environment of evolving technologies and processes
- Strong organization with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion
- Excellent customer service skills
- Comfortable using Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Excel
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification for a Library Professional 2 requires: - Demonstrated ability to lead projects independently from planning to completion
- Strong research and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to recommend process improvements and technical solutions within an established scope
Education/Experience for a Library Professional 1: This position requires a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 2 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience for a Library Professional 2: This position requires a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications: - Experience assisting with scientific research in archives, libraries, and/or museums
- Understanding of LANL cultural and technological history
- Interest in AI/ML/LLM functions and applications within Library Science
- Knowledge of and/or passion for any of the following: data management, databases, ontology development, programming, SQL, Python, Protégé
- Active Q Clearance
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
