Job Description

We are seeking a Medical Informaticist to support VA research and operations through advanced clinical data modeling, ontology mapping, and integration of structured and
unstructured EHR data. This role is instrumental in bridging the gap between data science, clinical knowledge, and large-scale health informatics research across the VA's enterprise health datasets. The position will focus on building interoperable data pipelines, curating meaningful phenotypes, and supporting clinical research tool development for large Veteran cohorts. The Medical Informaticist will also contribute to the VA's efforts in leveraging the Knowledge Extraction via Sparse Embedding Regression Network (KESER), Phenotype Multi-ethnicity Genetic Architecture (PheMEGA), and related knowledge networks.

Key Responsibilities
Organize, normalize, and map VA Electronic Health Record (EHR) data using standard medical ontologies and terminologies such as ICD-10, CPT, LOINC, RxNorm, UMLS, SNOMED CT, OMOP, and PheCodes.
Design and maintain clinically meaningful data models for large-scale research, including phenotype definitions and computable phenotyping frameworks.
Collaborate with clinical researchers, data scientists, and software developers to ensure semantic alignment across tools, models, and analytical frameworks.

Assist with extraction, transformation, and integration of both structured data and natural language processing (NLP) output from clinical notes.
Support the development of knowledge networks to link EHR, genomic, and social determinant data in support of research in precision medicine and population health.
Work with the VA's Informatics and Computing Infrastructure (VINCI) and collaborate on projects using HPC resources when applicable.
Guide the implementation of FAIR-aligned data practices, contributing to tool development on platforms like CIPHER.

Qualifications:
Master's or doctoral degree in Biomedical Informatics, Health Information Science, Public Health Informatics, or a related clinical/technical field.
4 6 years of experience in medical informatics, ideally within a large health system or government setting.
Experience working with large-scale EHR data and a deep understanding of clinical vocabularies, terminologies, and ontologies.
Familiarity with VA data systems and tools such as KESER and PheMEGA strongly preferred.
Knowledge of phenotyping methods and ontological reasoning in support of research.
Proficiency in SQL, Python, or R, and experience using platforms like i2b2, OMOP CDM, or similar.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience supporting VA, NIH, or similar federal health IT initiatives.
Experience building or supporting knowledge graphs or semantic networks in clinical research settings.
Familiarity with machine learning/NLP pipelines that incorporate clinical text.
Ability to create user-friendly documentation and training materials for clinical researchers and stakeholders.

Travel Requirements:
Occasional travel may be required to attend conferences, collaborate with partners, or visit client and/or research sites.

Work Environment:
Flexibility to adapt to evolving program needs and organizational priorities.

Physical Demands:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during virtual meetings, financial reviews, and program activities.
