Job Description





The Medical Director is the principal medical officer on campus and is responsible for developing, monitoring, and maintaining a quality medical program. The Medical Director is responsible to the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Campus Health Services and supervises the delivery of medical care provided by staff physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered dietician and physical therapist to eligible NAU affiliated individuals (students, employees and employee spouses). The medical director serves in both clinical and administrative functions distributed approximately 50%/50% or as defined by the Campus Health Services Associate Vice President (AVP).

Administrative Responsibilities - 45%

  • Formulate and monitor clinical policies and procedures in order to ensure quality of care, comply with organizational needs and accreditation standards in patient care, quality assurance and governance.
  • Oversee the clinical activities of medical provider staff This includes developing, maintaining, and updating the medical protocols which govern their activity and remaining current in Arizona law regarding their practice.
  • Serve as the designated medical supervisor for the laboratory departments.
  • Serve as chief advisor to the AVP regarding all matters relating to improving the quality and efficiency of medical care.
  • Review medical patient complaints and participate in resolution of concerns.
  • Chair medical staff meetings and coordinate educational programs for providers. Maintain meeting minutes.
  • Update credentials and privileges files.
  • Orient new medical staff members.
  • Serve as spokesperson for health services at various meetings as requested by the AVP.
  • Chair the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee to include:
    • lead peer review projects in accordance with AAAHC requirements
    • lead clinical quality improvement audits approved by CQIC committee
    • arranges meeting agendas and prepares minutes of each meeting
    • periodically reviews the accreditation standards of AAAHC to assure that the work of the CQIC is compliant.
    • work with the Committee members and department heads to promote follow-up of problems arising from area reviews, audits, studies and the identification of new problem areas.
  • Provide oversight and participate, as appropriate, on the Internal Review Committee (IRC). The IRC is charged to review occurrences (an incident that’s seriousness/risk is minimal) and adverse incidents which are serious occurrences.
  • Assume Medical Services administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Associate Vice President (AVP).
  • Interact with the local medical community.
  • Perform annual review of medical staff.
  • Using data from the electronic health record and provider profiles, monitor provider productivity.
  • Participate in committee work including OEM, Governing Body, SA Directors meetings.
  • Oversee medical management of student health insurance claims through referral and chart review.
  • Working with the Patient Services staff, manage the provider’s assignments for Same Day Care Clinic, late provider assignments, , FNP student preceptorships, student observers/shadowing experiences and leave.
  • Provide clinical vision and direction of the clinic.
  • Actively develop and monitor working relationships with academic departments.
  • Participate in campus-wide emergency preparedness, especially involving health issues such as pandemic infectious diseases and other disasters requiring medical assistance.
  • As the principal medical officer on campus, respond to and provide medical-related direction to the NAU campus as needed. Assist with applicable policy and procedures.
  • Respond to media requests with the approval of the Associate Vice President (AVP) and NAU Communications and Media Relations.
  • Inform the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Campus Health Services on current issues in health care which may influence delivery of care at Campus Health Services. Anticipate future trends.
  • Work with the Nursing Director in establishing and evaluating health center work flow.
  • Work with Health Promotion, Counseling Center, Disability Resources, EAW, Recreation Department, Wellness Committee and other campus partners and organizations to create, coordinate and implement health related programming.

Direct Patient Care - 40%

  • Provide primary medical and mental health care through the evaluation and management of acute, sub-acute and chronic conditions within scope of privileges applied for and granted by the Credentialing and Privileging Committee.
  • Utilize appropriate, diagnostic resources in a cost-effective manner to assist in the evaluation and management of these health conditions.
  • Utilize appropriate, pharmacologic modalities in a cost-effective manner to treat identified health conditions.
  • Provide patient counseling on health-related matters.
  • Provide patient education on health-related matters and healthy lifestyles.
  • Participate in 24-hour call (phone response only) in rotation with other providers.

Indirect Patient Care - 10%

  • Provide consultant services to other health center personnel.
  • Refer eligible individuals to community specialists when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Counseling Center, Disability Resources, Campus Living, Student Life, EAW and/or NAU Police Department as needed
  • Arrange for patient care coverage and provider supervision when absent from health center.
  • Document patient care related activities in the EHR in a clearly understood manner appropriate for the type of encounter.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Mainly works indoors
  • On-site potential exposure to contagious illness and bloodborne pathogens in daily activities.
  • Physical demands include: sitting, standing, bending and lifting of a minimum of 50 lbs on occasion.

Minimum Qualifications





  • Requires an MD or DO degree from an accredited school. Must be board-certified or board eligible.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Current MD or DO unrestricted license issued by the State of Arizona.
  • Current DEA license.
  • Current NPI number.
  • Current BLS certification through the American Heart Associate or ACLS training is required.

Background Information





This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Salary





Salary range begins at $207,133. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.



FLSA Status





This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.



Benefits





This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
