Job Summary

The Horticulture Manager is responsible for the management of the horticulture, CSA, and garden related market programs. This includes garden and greenhouse planning, scheduling trainee tasks, and preparing and facilitating lessons. 

Program Description

The Center for Living and Learning is located on a serene, thirty acre farm. Our Horticulture Program offers a unique work environment that combines a passion for gardening with a desire to help others. Our program offers horticultural therapy to those living with mental illness who are a part of our Vocational Rehabilitation Program. Through this program our trainees learn job skills which prepare them to work independently in the community. Our goal is to provide a supportive, therapeutic environment in which our trainees can heal and learn.

Expectations of the Horticulture Manager

A  reliable, coachable, and highly motivated individual who has a passion for the outdoors and working with their hands. You will work with a small team, and perform a variety of tasks, with a focus on harvesting, planting, pruning, weeding, mowing, and overall plant health care.  This role requires the ability to adjust plans to facilitate indoor activities based on changes in weather. This is a highly active role that requires you to lift 30 lbs. and be on your feet up to 6 hours per day.

As the Horticulture Manager, you will oversee the daily operations of the Horticulture Program to ensure the delivery of high-quality care to the trainees. You will oversee 2 teams of 6 or more trainees and be responsible for their participation, productivity, and appropriate workplace behavior and safety

Job Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

Garden/CSA Management

  • Serve as trainee point-of-contact for daily tasks within the horticulture program. You will be expected to address and appropriately resolve trainee needs in a respectful and compassionate manner
  • Overall garden management, including: creating garden plot layouts, operating the irrigation systems, greenhouse management, seed starting, planting, harvesting, compost management, fruit tree care, and implementing organic/natural pest and weed control
  • Track and manage supply levels for the CSA, garden, and equipment (including gas and maintenance materials) to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations.
  • Effectively assess trainee needs and coordinate gardening tasks appropriate to their abilities and skills
  • Work with vocational staff to help trainees set and uphold meaningful vocational and garden goals, offering encouragement, structured accountability, and regular progress check-ins to support growth and success.
  • Maintain gardening grounds by mowing, weeding, trimming and landscaping as needed
  • Digitally record daily progress notes to track trainee progress within the Horticultural Program
  • Develop and teach curriculum based gardening lessons when weather prohibits hands on gardening
  • Management of a high quality CSA Program, including CSA marketing/advertising, preparation of weekly CSA boxes and communication with CSA partners

Volunteer Management

  • Manage and coordinate volunteers across multiple projects, collaborating with internal teams to assign roles, provide guidance, and ensure efficient use of volunteer resources

Market Management

  • Manage inventory levels with retail partners, ensuring accurate stock counts, timely replenishment, and efficient product distribution
  • Oversee preparation of garden products for annual markets by managing inventory, organizing labeling and packaging, and maintaining clear communication with market coordinator

Communications

  • Assist with social media content creation and scheduling and write quarterly garden updates for the organization’s newsletter

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Formal education in horticulture required OR Horticulture Experience (equivalent  to 4 years preferred) 
  • At least 2 years of hands-on work experience in the horticulture field is required.
  • Mental Health/Psychology/OT (1 year preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Certified Professional Horticulturist, Master Gardener Certificate, or the ability and interest to attain these qualifications
  • Successful experience networking with local growers, restaurants, and other non profit organizations a plus
