BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Early College programs are intentionally designed to empower students traditionally underrepresented in higher education. MA Early College Designated Programs work to blend elements of high school and college to provide students with the opportunity to experience and complete college level academic coursework on a clearly articulated pathway and simultaneously gain exposure to a variety of career opportunities. Early college programs also reduce the time and expense of earning a college credential while increasing the likelihood of completion.

Early College instructors are competent in their discipline. Ideal candidates will also have successful experience working effectively with a diverse student body with a wide range of academic preparedness. Early College instructors also demonstrate a commitment to the mission and philosophy of North Shore Community College to promote social justice at NSCC and in the community by delivering equitable student outcomes and to the Early College Designation Guiding Principles: equitable access, guided academic pathways, enhanced student support, connection to career, and effective partnerships.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

These faculty positions require teaching writing courses (Composition 1 and 2) as the only teaching assignment each semester. These classes will primarily be in the Early College portion of the college, but regular Composition might also be part of the teaching assignment. Early college is the part of the college that offers regular NSCC courses to area high schools; taught on-campus and off-campus. Composition courses are designed for students in transfer programs as well as those in career programs. Emphasis is on developing skills of writing, reading, analytical thinking, and research. Students learn to organize material, analyze ideas, and produce clear writing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Teach up to five courses or fifteen credits each semester in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, primarily with early college students.
  2. Participate in departmental planning and curriculum development.
  3. Provide academic advising for students.
  4. Provide college service such as serving on governance committees.
  5. Must be willing to travel between campuses as needed or to offsite high schools to fulfill instructional and non-instructional workload.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Experience with learning management systems preferred.
  • Experience with secondary learners and developmental/ELL learners preferred.
  • Experience in developing and assessing student learning outcomes required.
