Job Description

The City of Williamstown is currently accepting applications for the Cable Service Installer position. This is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package. The starting pay rate is $19.00 per hour and will be based on the applicant's experience and qualifications. Primary responsibilities include installing cable telecommunications services in residential and commercial locations; constructing, repairing, and maintaining fiber optic and coaxial lines; and troubleshooting electronic and data communication systems. Experience in cable installation or telecommunications is preferred but not required. Candidates must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, at elevated heights, and be capable of climbing communication towers.

I. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

Under general direction, installs and maintains cable television services and performs related work as required.


II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Assists with extending new lines and rebuilding lines.
  • Insta11s cable television services in homes and businesses, including running wire from pole to building, programming televisions, etc.
  • Pre-wires new buildings for cable television during construction phase.
  • Performs troubleshooting duties; corrects routine cable problems by repairing or replacing damaged equipment and tom or broken cable.
  • Disconnect service for non-payment; reconnects as requested following payment.
  • Assists with locating and repairing leakage in service.
  • May conduct periodic illegal hookup audits.
  • Turns in daily paperwork for installations and work orders.
  • Maintains clean vehicles and equipment.
  • Detects malfunctions in equipment and makes minor repairs or recommends major repairs to superiors.
  • Performs on-call duties on scheduled basis. Assists other departments.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information so designated.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by one-year related work experience required. Completion of vocational school training in related field preferred but not required.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge: Knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in cable television installation and maintenance. Thorough knowledge of operating characteristics, servicing requirements, work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with vehicles, equipment and tools and pole climbing. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and administrative regulations, standards, policies and procedures regarding cable television installation and maintenance. Knowledge of Wi-Fi, IP networking, and basic electricity, Thorough knowledge of geography of the service area.


Abilities: Ability to work independently, and to effectively and efficiently allocate time for each job. Ability to use pole climbing equipment and work for extended periods while on pole. Ability to climb towers up to 300 feet. Ability to accept and implement new techniques and technologies on a continuing basis. Ability to operate all equipment assigned to the department. Ability to detect mechanical flaws and make minor repairs to equipment. Ability to maintain safety standards and practices. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, employees and public. Ability to perform manual labor under extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time. Possess mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity and good physical condition. Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours.


Licenses and/or Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at the discretion of the city, may be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License. Certification by Society of Cable Television Engineers preferred but not required.



 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB: Work is performed primarily outdoors including walking and standing, regardless of weather conditions; must be able to lift objects weighing more than 25 pounds; must operate equipment and vehicle; exposed to machinery and its moving parts; exposed to dangerous machinery and sharp tools; required to be in high places (pole climbing equipment and bucket trucks), confined spaces, and using stairs and ladders in order to complete work assignments. Must be able to climb towers up to 300 feet in height. Must be able to use and/or operate a bucket truck, cable meter, climbing gear, hand tools, drills, ladders, and vehicles assigned to the department.
