Job Description

Hertha Metals is an innovative start-up revolutionizing the steel industry with a cutting-edge technology that enables cost-competitive, green iron production. As we scale our operations and secure financing for future projects, we seek a dynamic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to drive our financial strategy, secure project financing, and lead key strategic partnerships.

Your responsibilities 
  • Project & Corporate Financing: Secure both dilutive and non-dilutive financing, including venture capital, government grants, loans, and strategic investments to support the company’s rapid expansion.
  • Technoeconomic & Financial Modeling: Develop, refine, and present detailed technoeconomic models to guide corporate decision-making and key product development directions, optimize capital efficiency, and attract investors.
  • Fundraising & Investor Relations: Lead capital-raising efforts for non-dilutive funding, debt financing, strategic funding avenues. B uild relationships with VCs, private equity, and institutional investors, and manage investor communications.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with executive leadership to define the company’s long-term financial strategy, growth roadmap, and risk management approach.
  • Partnerships & Negotiations: Manage and negotiate strategic partnerships, alongside the leadership team, with suppliers, distributors, and industry stakeholders to strengthen the company’s market position and supply chain.
  • Financial Leadership & Operations: Establish financial policies, oversee cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting to ensure strong fiscal health.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Oversight: Ensure adherence to financial regulations, tax laws, and reporting requirements in the U.S. and international markets.
  • Use insights to pivot or refine the company’s roadmap in response to changing market demands 
  • Develop plant operating budgets through coordination with operations and engineering teams  
  • Take ownership of designing the capital stack for financing Hertha's pilot plants, requiring an understanding of project finance 
Your Experience
  • Start-Up Finance Expertise – Proven track record in start-ups, scale-ups, and high-growth companies , with experience navigating the financial challenges of early-stage businesses.
  • Project Financing Experience – Demonstrated ability to secure infrastructure, industrial, or manufacturing project financing , including private, public, and alternative funding sources.
  • Technoeconomic & Financial Modeling – Strong analytical skills in financial modeling, technoeconomic assessments and modeling, and ROI analysis to support investment decisions.
  • Venture Capital & Investor Relations – Experience securing VC, private equity, or strategic investment and managing investor expectations.
  • Non-Dilutive Funding Knowledge – Experience securing grants, tax incentives, and government-backed financing is a plus.
  • Strategic Negotiation Skills – Strong ability to structure and negotiate strategic partnerships with key industry players, ensuring our competitive advantage.
  • Fast-Paced & Adaptive Mindset – Ability to operate in a high-growth, fast-moving environment, balancing strategic planning with hands-on execution.
Your experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree (Accounting, Marketing, Economics or Engineering with finance background) 
  • The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 10–15 years of relevant experience . The following is an approximate outline of the ideal candidate’s experience:
    • At least 5–7 years in a start-up or rapidly growing company environment, preferably in industries related to manufacturing, energy, or technology. This is crucial for understanding the financial challenges and dynamics specific to scaling new ventures.
    • Experience in Project Financing: A proven track record of securing project financing , including both dilutive and non-dilutive capital (e.g., grants, venture capital, loans, government funding) for large-scale industrial projects, ideally with a focus on capital-intensive industries such as manufacturing, energy, or infrastructure.
    • Technoeconomic Modeling Expertise: At least 5 years of experience in technoeconomic modeling and financial analysis in industries requiring high levels of technical and economic evaluation to inform investment and financing decisions.
    • Venture Capital and Strategic Partnerships: Extensive experience (5+ years) in VC funding and managing strategic partnerships , especially in negotiating with suppliers, distributors, and investors to create and maintain value for the company.
    • Leadership and Strategic Planning: 3–5 years of direct leadership experience as a CFO or in a senior finance role, overseeing financial strategy, planning, and operations while working closely with senior leadership on strategic business decisions .
    • Fast-Paced & Adaptive Work Environment: The ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up environment, ideally with experience in managing rapid growth and financial scaling .
