About the Indiana Educational Resource Center (IERC):

 

The Indiana Educational Resource Center at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired produces and maintains a statewide, centralized repository of accessible education materials (AEMs) for school-age students who are blind, visually impaired, have low vision, or have other documented print disabilities. Materials are provided at no cost to eligible students and are on loan to the ordering local education agencies. Formats include digital, Braille, large print, tangible aids, and equipment.

 

The IERC also houses and manages the Braille Transcription Project initiative which produces instructional materials for local school systems and education agencies.

 

Salary:

 

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $39,000. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

 

The Braille Transcriber Specialist proofreads, edits, formats, and produces Braille instructional materials and tactile graphics as requested by local school systems. You will manage storage and retrieval of publisher and braille files, production and transcription databases and spreadsheets, correspondence, and information requests for the Braille Project. You will coordinate with the IERC braille production facility, oversee the operation of the production equipment, and assist the supervisor in the daily planning of transcriptions and production.

 

A Day in the Life:

 

Essential duties are:

  • Create electronic files for Braille production using scanning technology, keyboarding, Braille translation software, and six-key entry.
  • Transcribe Braille instructional materials according to national Braille format guidelines of the Braille Authority of North America (BANA).
  • Use various methods, including manual collage method and computer graphics, to design and/or produce diagrams and other graphics in tactile form.
  • Utilize NIMAS files and advanced functions of MS Word in transcribing braille instructional materials.
  • Operate and maintain equipment associated with embossing, bursting, labeling, and binding Braille materials and tactile graphics.
  • Assist in the assignment and formatting of materials.
  • Respond to questions about Braille, formatting, and translations of instructional materials.
  • Send, receive, and edit electronic files by email and file share platforms.
  • Create and maintain transcription and production databases. 
  • Maintain relationships with similar projects at the national, state, and local levels and with the American Printing House for the Blind and other publishers.
  • Participate in continuing education and training in producing Braille materials.
  • Inform the manager and co-workers about transcription and production requests and timelines.

What You'll Need for Success:

 

Core requirements:

  • At least two years of experience in Braille transcription and formatting.
  • Knowledge of the Literary Braille code.
  • Knowledge of Braille translation software and methods for adapting print materials into tactile form.
  • Strong computer skills, including keyboarding (50 wpm), word processing, and Windows PCs.
  • Experience in using advanced functions in Word, Excel, and Adobe Corel Draw or the ability to learn within six months.
  • Advanced English skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
  • Basic knowledge of human relations, communication, and record keeping.
  • Ability to work well under the pressure of tight timelines and changing deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.

 

 

Additional conditions for employment:

  • Certification in Unified English Braille (UEB) Literary Braille within the first year of employment.
  • Certification in Braille Formatting within the second year of employment.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
