EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The Land Division ensures the effective and efficient use of public lands not otherwise set aside to other agencies, otherwise known as "unencumbered State lands", in ways that fulfill the public trust obligations and promote the sustained social, environmental, and economic well-being of Hawaii's people. Our division acquires land needed for public purposes such as protection of conservation and natural resource lands and works with the Board of Land and Natural Resources (Board) to obtain approval to transfer the management of lands to other government agencies for their respective uses through executive orders and disposes of land to the private sector through leases, licenses, grants of easements, revocable permits, and rights-of-entry.The Land Division is responsible for managing approximately 300 short-term permits and 2,000 longer-term dispositions such as leases and easements, statewide, for commercial purposes, and a handful of residential leases and permits. The Land Division also maintains an inventory of State lands and is a repository of government land documents dating back to the Great Mahele of 1848. Additionally, the Land Division provides for the planning, development, and management of public lands and other lands under executive order; and administers the land acquisition and disposition program.The District Land Agent is responsible for conducting the management of State lands within the county-wide district under the Department of Land and Natural Resources (Department). Management pertains to the use of land through sale, lease, or other means of disposition. Functions involved include the analysis of applications, negotiation of terms and conditions, recommendation of actions, processing dispositions, enforcing terms and conditions, stopping illegal use, collecting required monies, providing information on policies and procedures, and overseeing office operations. Other duties also include representing Department interests relative to land management, conservation, and land development projects in the district, and other duties as required.
